What Does "Quadrigeminal Plate Arachnoid Cyst" In An MRI Report Mean?

Question: Hello my name is XXXXXXX My Mri showed a 1.4cm Quadrigeminal Plate arachnoid cyst with associated deformity of the posterior midbrain. Will have to remove it ?

I have read through your query in details.
Quadrigemminal plate arachnoid cysts have been known to occur rarely and your cyst is a small one at 1.4 cm in size. It will help to know the symptoms you have and how much the cyst has grown with time. Arachnoid cysts are thin walled bubble like fluid containing structures and are harmless. The pressure caused by these cysts might require its removal. If there is compression to the flow of cerebrospinal fluid or the posterior midbrain as you have mentioned then a surgical treatment might be indicated. Even in surgical methods there are different ways such a cyst can be approached and I would like to know what your neurosurgeon suggests and then discuss in detail about that particular procedure.

The posterior midbrain is a sensitive and small part of the brain and even a slight pressure can cause significant symptoms and require close monitoring of symptoms for few months and followed by surgical treatments.

If possible please send across the MRI report or images for me to know the exact location of your cyst in technical terms.

This was my first MRI. I'll see the neurosurgeon next week. My symptoms are sometimes I'm nausea and a bit tired. Is the area in the front or the back? Also if I get surgery will skull removable be necessary ? And also can I be awake if I choose surgery? Thanks for answering my questions

Thanks for writing back with an update.

Nausea and tiredness are not reasons to do surgery unless it is severe. I guess your neurosurgeon will have a detailed look at your images and symptoms before recommending any surgical procedure.

I have seen many patients with arachnoid cysts (over 130 patients in last 3 and half years) and most of them required no treatment. Presently there are methods like endoscopy through nose and mouth to reach the brain. These are less invasive and make the surgical procedures much safer than earlier. Making a hole in the skull is required only if the neurosurgeon feels that doing it that way will give more access for removal of the cyst. You can choose to be awake while the surgery is going on and this requires you to discuss it with your operating surgeon and anaesthetist.
