What Do These Ultrasound Findings Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 11 Jan 2016
Question: Hi,

I just had a ultrasound on my kidneys and bladder and the results were "Unremarkable Renal Ultrasound" Am I correct that this means normal?

Also my bladder was "underdistended" what does that mean?

Thanks for your help!

Brief Answer:
Yes,you have correct interpretation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Yes,you have correct interpretation. It means normal ultrasound of KUB region.
Kidneys and urinary bladder are normal.

Under distended urinary bladder means urinary bladder is not optimally filled.Normally we scan pelvis organs in full urinary bladder for better view.Ultrasound require media(like urine in urinary bladder)to show surrounding structures.
I am sure that your radiologist didn't found any abnormality in pelvis, other wise radiologist should have asked to wait for filling of urinary bladder.
In normal cases, sometimes we can comment even if urinary bladder is not fully optimally filled.

Get well soon.

Thank you. So even though it wasnt totally full the dr was still happy with what they saw in the ultrasound and was able to conclude it was normal?

Once last question ( thank you for your help!) report attached

So if the radiologist signs off the scan as unremarkable even though the bladder wasn't fully filled (I did drink quite a bit of water) is he comfortable that what he saw was okay? The tech doing the scan went to make sure the radiologist was happy with the images after the scan and she came back and said he was. Assuming if he wasn't happy or couldn't see clearly he wouldn't have signed the report "unremarkable" right?

Just get very anxious about this stuff, sorry for the long winded question. .

Brief Answer:
Under distended means partially filled and don't worry about this finding.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Under distended means partially filled and please don't worry about this finding. In males there is generally no problem to visualize pelvis in partially filled bladder as we have to concentrate mainly on prostate.
In females there may be some problem in partially filled urinary bladder if there are any pelvic pathology.

We generally ask our patients to wait for bladder filling if there is any confusion.
I am sure that your radiologist must had been satisfied with findings so didn't ask to wait.
Please don't worry,you are fine.

Thank you so much for your answer. So the radioligist would be able to get a good enough look a the bladder walls etc even partially full. The tech did check with him to see if the images were okay and apparently they were.

Also another quick related question - I also had a scan of my testicles. Everything was fine on the report no masses etc. However, I know from past exams and scans that i have two very tiny cysts (one on each epydidymis), that the dr also felt in the exam prior to the scan. In the report the radiologist only noted in the report the cyst on the right side. Is it normal that the radiologist didnt see that or perhaps the technician didnt capture something that small on the image? I assumed everything showed up and worried a bit that maybe he didnt see other stuff (as you probably guessed i have anxiouty about this stuff. Sorry if i sound a bit paranoid. Thanks so much for your help!)
