What Do These ALT And AST Levels Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 8 Dec 2014
Question: My AST is 80 and my ALT is 95 in liver tests this week. I have been drinking too much wine and have ceased its use with these numbers. I am overweight at 320 lbs (5'9"). I have been reading on line.

My A1C is 5.5 and my latest glucose is 109. (It was 114 in a stick check in October.) I am possibly pre-diabetic.

Q1 Do these AST and ALT numbers indicate real or possible irreversible damage to my liver?

Q2 How fast can I get the numbers down; should it be a high carbohydrate/low protein diet? My doctor wants new liver tests in a month. So far he has only said cut back on the wine. At this point, I was going to try to do a more serious diet change for the month to see what change comes in the numbers.

Needless to say, I am worried, and I hope I haven't done permanent damage.

Brief Answer:
You need not be much worried regarding this

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX,

Welcome to healthcaremagic.

I am Dr.Senduran,General physician hope to answer your queries.

1) Your AST,ALT numbers are not that high and doesn't indicate any irreversible damage..Liver function is mildly deranged but it is reversible..I appreciate your response by avoiding wine consumption and also for following measures to lose weight.

2) You can see the improvement in lab values(ALT,AST) gradually over few weeks(3-4) and complete biochemical improvement takes few months(3 to 4) with appropriate measures.

No, Specific diet changes are not required..Overall healthy diet would be enough..

Hope this answers your query..If any further doubt's get back to me or close the discussion by rating it..

Take care and wish you good health
