Question: Had a hysterectomy about 4 years ago and they left one ovary. The last month or so my breast have been really tender and sore I put on a few pounds in the last 6 months just been on vacation and such. Would that have something to do with it. Always weighing about 138 now 143/144 trying now to get it off. Could that cause the soreness weight gain.....

Brief Answer:
Ovary is not the reason for weight gain after hysterectomy.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns today.
It is good that they retained at least one ovary during hysterectomy. Ovarian hormones are very important for general well being.
There are several reasons for tender and sore breasts.
Does this soreness occur cyclically i.e, every 3-4 weeks? If so then it is due to variations in hormones secreted by the ovary which usually occurs in women in their forties.
If it is not cyclical it can be due to any of the causes below.
1.It could be due to fibrocystic breasts. This is not a disease. Some women normally have lumpy (small nodules) gland tissue which is called as fibrocystic breast. This can cause pain and tenderness.
2.If you are doing exercises ( running, push ups etc) without using well supported bra, it can cause sore breasts.
3.Sometimes increased prolactin hormone and thyroid hormone deficiency can cause sore breasts.
Try doing these simple things:
-Wear well supported sports bra even while sleeping.
-Cut down on alcohol, caffeine and fats in your diet
-Use heating pad or warm water bottle
-Take vitamin E capsules
-If you are doing heavy weight lifting exercises, stop doing it. Moderate exercise is good for you.
-Try doing yoga to relax your mind and body.
-Take pain killers like Ibuprofen 400mg twice daily after food and see.
- Discuss with your doctor about using Evening Primrose oil.
If these measures do not give relief then you need to consult your doctor and get thyroid and prolactin hormone checked.
Please note that breast pain is NOT a common symptom of breast cancer. Have you palpated your breasts? Did you feel any lump? Is there any family history of breast /ovarian/colon cancer? If your answer is yes then I would be concerned about breast cancer. To put your mind at ease I advise you to have your breasts examined by surgeon/Gynecologist/GP. I am confident that the breast examination will be normal.
Ovary is not the reason for weight gain after hysterectomy. Lack of exercise during recovery and comfort eating while on vacation can be the reason for weight gain. Body metabolism also slows down after 40 years. If you do not cut down on calories it can cause weight gain.
I hope this helps.

Brief Answer:
The causes for sore breast and nipples are almost the same.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
The causes for sore breast and nipples are almost the same.
In addition to above causes,
-allergy to shower gel/ lotions/ fabric can cause inflammation in the nipples resulting in nipples

-Infection. In this case nipples will usually show redness.

-Some medicines like antidepressants, cimetidine etc can cause sore nipple and sore breast.
I hope this helps.
