Question: My question is my Mother got the shingles vaccine on October 20 and now after six weeks she
has developed a rash all over her body. She said she may not have had chickenpox. Would this
have caused her to develop shingles and/or chickenpox. Also she always has a positivie Mantou
test for TB. Also she has developed severe headaches and nausea and vomiting along with the rash.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Based on your description of the rash , this is neither shingles nor chicken pox. It appears to be an allergic reaction.

No, the shingles vaccine doesn't cause shingles and/or chickenpox. Its recommended regardless of whether a person has been affected or not in the past.

With positive PPD, chest x ray should be done with sputum for AFB for tuberculosis. INH and vitamin B 6 should also be advised for 9 months according to the local TB guidelines.

The rash needs to be examined. If its an allergic reaction, indeed, then, Antihistamines and anti emetics are required for treatment for now. You should take her to an ER for proper assessment of the rash with headache and vomiting.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
