What Causes Warmth On Leg?

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Oct 2014
Question: Hi, today I have been experiencing a sudden warmth to the outside area of my calf in my left leg. I'm a 55 year old female in excellent health, active, non-smoker, non-drinker. What can this be a symptom of?

Brief Answer:
Can be a peripheral vascular disease.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The feeling of sudden warmth without any associated pain in the calf can be due to peripheral vascular disease, vitamin B12 deficiency, diabetes, hypothyroidism, neurological causes or malnutrition- electrolyte imbalances.

Get your blood sugar and thyroid hormones levels evaluated. You can take some vit B12 for some days and see if the symptoms improve. If the symptoms persist then get the above mentioned possibilities ruled out from a neurologist.

I hope this answers your query.

I don't understand how you arrived at these possible diagnoses. I looked up each one, with the exception of neurological causes (since that's so vague), and my symptom of "warm calf" is not a symptom of the diseases you listed. In fact, in some of the diseases you mentioned, the opposite (a cold leg/foot) was a symptom.

I checked WebMD and the Mayo Clinic web sites for my research. Plus, I don't fit the pattern. I'm slender, fit, eat healthy, get daily exercise.

I'm not happy with this diagnosis. I don't feel you've addressed my problem at all.

Brief Answer:
Searching the symptoms will not help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Self diagnosis with the help of symptom checker is an easy way to confuse yourself. The feeling of warmth or coldness can be due to similar causes- related to nerve conduction. An overall assessment with a physical examination are integral parts of a proper diagnosis which is not possible online. You can get a few blood tests done under the guidance of your physician and find out the cause.
Hope my answer is helpful.
