Brief Answer:
Depends upon the amount of blood and recurrence.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. If the amount of blood was very little, like a stain, no immediate investigations are required. It is common to get a little amount of blood in the throat and nose after severe straining and retching. The loud pop was most likely a muscle spasm.

2. If the episode repeats, get a nasal endoscopy and a gastro-endoscopy done. Blood investigations for blood clotting parameters and a stool examination for occult blood should be done. Blood pressure readings should be noted. Since the cardio-respiratory system is normal, there is no cause for worry.

3. I must emphasize that a one-off episode where the bleeding stops on its own needs no active management.

If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Should the pop in my throat have effected my heart or caused chest discomfort? I was actually using fml eyedrops in my eyes which are steroids for inflammation and i had some sort of allergic reaction and my eyes started to twinge and pop, then i got popping in my left ear and finally the pop in my throat and i think they are connected, do u think they are connected? My main concern is the heart palpatations and chest discomfort, can u explain that? My gp said it was a broken blood vessell, do u agree? Thank you

Brief Answer:
Unlikely to affect the heart. Referred sensations are common.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. The pop (spasm) in your throat will not affect your heart but can cause chest discomfort.

2. Yes, it is most likely to be a ruptured small unnamed blood vessel which will heal.

3. Sensation from head and neck areas are often related due to common nerve supply and embryonic origin.

If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Will the chest discomfort go away? What happens if it was a major Blood vessell, would that effect my heart? Is there a way to find out if it was a major or minor blood vessell? thanks a lot

Brief Answer:
Yes, the chest discomfort will go away.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. Yes, the chest discomfort will go away if it is related to any spasm. Medication can help, especially if there is an underlying esophagitis or gastritis due to relfux or swallowing some blood.

2. Any major vessel bleed would be hard to miss. There would be a lot of continuous or recurrent bleeding through the mouth and nose. Some would be swallowed and show up in stool samples. Swallowed blood leads to irritation of the food pipe and stomach (esophagitis and gastritis).

3. Small vessels bleeds are difficult to visualize after they stop. They may never be seen again unless they recur.

4. Proceed as per the above treatment plan.

If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

I appreciate your response. I feel a bit funny when i walk in my left leg, is that related to my heart? no doctor has been able to tell me what the popping in the eyes is from the fml eyedrops (steroids) its not listed on the side effects, its like something is wriggling about in my eyes causing a popping, seeing as youve been so helpful, do u have any ideas? i now see fixed white/black dots in my vision when im in the sunlight but ive had them tested and the retina is fine. Youve been so helpful to me, its very refreshing to have a doctor explain with so much detail, thats exactley what i need.

Brief Answer:
Spine problems, muscle spasms and floaters.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. The odd sensation in the left leg is more likely to be neurological problem that a cardiac one. The nerve fibers that carry sensation are on the outside of a nerve and the motor fibers are deeper inside. If you have no weakness in that leg, it could be a mild spinal problem. You can also let a Neurologist check the reflexes, muscle power and gait. A doppler study of the leg vessels will help rule out varicose veins or clots.

2. The popping in the eyes is a result of muscle movements/spasms in the eye, nose, face and throat which are usually normal.

3. The white/black dots are either floaters or you are seeing blood blow, which again is very common.

If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

I think this is my final question, i have now got popping in my eyes, ear and throat and i get occasional pops , twinges and spasms in other parts of my body, like my chest, legs, eyebrow, head and stomach, are these sensations doing any damage? have they all come from the inital source the eyes? am i in danger of something popping in my brain or heart? how long will these sensations last? Thank you so much.

Brief Answer:
These have no major significance.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for following up.

1. There occasional pops, twinges and spasms are normal and insignificant.

2. They always exist but sometimes we become more aware of them.

3. They do not cause any serious damage. They are also unlikely to be due to any major disorder.

4. It is not necessary that the eyes are the initial source.

5. It is not possible to predict whether they willl go away or how long tey will last.

6. Get a Neurologists opinion, whi may advise medication or nutritional supplementation.

Wishing you good health,

Regards.

Sorry to bother u again but i keep getting heart palpatations all the time whenever i move, would u recommend a test for that? ive had an ecg and echo dopler, would that show if my heart was damaged? im sure this heart palpatations was from the pop in my throat as i never had a problem with my heart before. I still have some chest discomfort but its mild, how long until the chest discomfort will go away? its been two weeks since the pop. I didnt have chest discomfort or heart palpatations until a couple of days after the pop which is interesting.

Brief Answer:
Nil cardiac findings, anxiety/gatritis, chest discomfort will subside soon.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. A normal ECG and Echo Doppler study means that there is no damage to the heart.

2. The palpitations are due to anxiety and gastritis (hence the delayed symptoms).

3. The chest discomfort will subside after treatment.

If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.
