What Causes Vomiting And Abdominal Discomfort?

default
Posted on Tue, 5 Sep 2017
Question: Yesterday afternoon I had a lot of discomfort in the area between my abdomen and rib cage. It almost felt like a "line of pain". It got progressively worse through the evening and last night. I was unable to sleep laying on my back or either side. I induced some vomiting and it was watery, pale orange. I have not had a normal bowel movement since Thursday morning. The area is sensitive to the touch and feels somewhat bloated. The pain has subsided a bit, but it is still there and sensitive.

I was having a difficult time characterizing the pain. It is more like throbbing than burning.
The "line of pain" was from side to side but it now seems to be mostly in the center of my torso localized in the stomach area.
There is no reddening or rash visible (I had thought of shingles as a possible problem, but ruled it out because of the lack of rash).
For the past three weeks I did have a backache. I attributed it to my poor golf swing. I played in a tournament a couple of weeks back. About two days after I got home, my back was hurting (lower left side). It seemed to get better and so I played golf last week. After stretching, it seemed to loosen up and I played about 14 holes without any difficulty. It then started to tighten up. The next week (which is to say this week until yesterday), it was pretty bad - I had trouble getting my left leg in/out of car and a throbbing pain. That seems much better now.
I have been fairly healthy my whole life. Slightly overweight, but fairly athletic. I typically play about 4-6 rounds of golf a month (last year I was playing 2-3 / week, but I have had other commitments).
I take blood pressure and cholesterol medicine. All of my labs are in the normal range.
About three weeks ago I was diagnosed with a heart murmur. The echocardiogram showed it was mild and that my heart function is good. The cardiologist said it was just ageing, and of no concern - have a follow-up in a year.
No photos to post since there is no rash.

Brief Answer:
As detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback.
Since there is a backache, the possibility of having radiculopathy that is neurogenic pain being referred to the abdomen has to be borne in mind as there is local increased sensitivity to touch.
ANother reason can be colitis or enterocolitis as you do not have normal bowel movements since Thursday morning, although you have not mentioned the exact symptoms.
Considering these possibilities it would be better to have clinical examination guiding for the needed investigations to get the exact diagnosis to get a proper medication/management.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Get clinical evaluation by your Doctor.
Tests of stool and blood.
Ultrasonography of the abdomen, further investigations as may be needed.
Neurological evaluation and MRI of the thoraco-lumbar spine may be needed as you have had severe symptoms.

All these will help to get an accurate diagnosis and a plan for proper management.

I hope this answer helps you, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
