Throbbing pain after dance injury above ankle. Swelling, redness, bruising persist. Sprain/ fracture possible?

I am having throbbing pain after a dance injury on the inner portion of my right foot between the arch and the ankle. The accident happened late last night but the pain has gradually intensified over 24 hours. Redness and bruising has also gradually increased and spread. Minimal swelling. I want to know if this sounds more like a break or a sprain? Being a dancer, I have broken my 4th and 5th metetarsels of both feet and I have severely sprained my left ankle. This is a new injury and it feels different than my previous injuries. Thank you

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Based on the description of symptoms, you could have suffered a sprain of ankle.

An xray of the injured area is essential to rule out any bony injury.

The primary management of a sprained ankle is as follows -
* Protection to the ankle in the form of a splint or boot
* Rest to the injured area and avoid bearing weight on the leg
* Elevation of the foot end
* Elastic compression bandage around the swollen area
* Ice packing once in every 2 hours to alleviate the pain
* analgesic medications as needed

If your symptoms are still persisting , consult an orthopedic surgeon for further management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Hi,
It might be soft tissue injury, ligament injury or fracture.
Without X-ray, it is difficult to differentiate a fracture from others. I suggest you to consult an orthopaedician nearby for a detailed examination. You may get the X-ray of the area affected under his/her guidance.
In the interim,apply ice packs to the affected area,anti-inflammatory drug like motrin to reduce pain and inflammation. Avoid putting weight and rest well.
Hope this helps.
