Hi! Welcome to health care magic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible.

Based on the history of acute onset and the looks of it suggests more of an allergic origin. Though the presence of lymph node enlargement supports the infective origin more. In any case he needs to be examined by his GP for presence of other lymph nodes and ultrasound CT neck if needed. To start with OTC antihistamines or after discussing with your GP anti histamines like cetrizine or loratidine may be given and anti inflammatory drugs like acetaminophen or ibuprofen of no contraindication is present may help for temporary relief and if doesn't settle sooner then detailed blood work up may also be needed. Wishing him a quick recovery. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Regards.
