What Causes Tiredness, Headaches, Lightheadedness, Upset Stomach And Difficulty In Sleeping?

Question: All this week, I've felt run down, tired, with headaches, light headedness, had some digestive discomfort and had trouble sleeping. I hardly ever feel this way, and am athletic, run and am in pretty good shape. It's Friday now and I'm starting to worry. It takes a lot for me to even think about seeing a doctor. Any ideas on what I should do next?

Brief Answer:
Possible Viral Infection / Some Other Possibilities Discussed

Detailed Answer:
Good day! I'm sorry you are experiencing this illness, I hope and trust you will make a recovery soon. There can be multiple causes for the symptoms you are feeling, ranging from temporary and non-threatening to more serious. To truly give you a definitive answer, blood work and a physical exam would need to be performed. Nonetheless, I will help describe to you a few possibles. First and foremost when I see a patient with symptoms such as these I think of a Virus. Do you have any nausea, vomiting diarrhea and or muscle cramps? These symptoms as well as those you described come with various forms of viral infections, from GI viruses, to Flu-Like illness. Symptoms with a viral infection can last for up to 1-2 weeks. In truth there is no treatment as their would be with a bacterial infection (less common), antibiotics are not recommended. Vigorous hydration, proper nutrition and rest will heal you the quickest. It is what I recommend. Do you have any fevers, chills? Any disturbances in vision and or auditory changes? Of course infections of bacterial nature (treatable with antibiotics); viral and bacterial episodes of meningitis, anemia (lack of adequate blood supply due to improper iron, bleeding or nutritional deficiencies), and other digestive insults (from digested bugs or toxins) can cause these symptoms as well. To be completely honest, you would require a checkup at the doctor to fully determine whether or not these were possibilities in your case; and as they are more serious than a viral etiology (very common, and mostly less dangerous), It would be worthwhile to rule them out. My advise is to schedule a meeting with your primary care physician so he can perform a physical and if necessary run tests. It is likely that he will tell you this is viral and send you home with advise to rest and drink lots of water, but it is always good to be safe. Things to note are any Fever, chills, blood and or black stools or vomiting, auditory and visual disturbances, shortness of breath with productive coughs, pain and stiffness in the neck, or any episodes of 'passing out". If you experience any of these symptoms I suggest you contact emergency services and see a physician immediately.

I hope this advise has helped, please contact me with any follow up questions you may have. If you are experiencing any other symptoms you have not noted here, I would be interested in knowing; as to better give you a definitive answer or point you in a more precise direction. I wish you the best.
