Brief Answer:
multiple possibilities need workup

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking
The possibilities for tingling in left forearm and fingers also known as paresthesia are many and depends on a clinical complete correlated history.
Foremost likely cause at your age is nutritional neuropathy when vitamin b 12 and folic acid levels in the body decline. Gastric trouble or a vegan diet makes the odds more likely.nutrional neuropathy are the commonest cause of tingling.
Then comes compressive neuropathy. The nerves are getting compressed at some point prior to tingling sensation in this case like cervical spine levels or down on elbow levels etc. Old age with age related disc degeneration or any rheumatological history or a history of trauma makes that nore likely. Thoracic outlet syndrome also comes under this heading.
Then comes metabolic causes like diabetes. Diabetic neuropathy is classic for neuropathic and paresthesia but a single limb involved and other spared is not the way it presents.
Then neurological issues and demyelanation issues like multiple sclerosis also present this way.
The other common cause is alcoholic neuropathy and is common in alcoholic users .basic principle is the same here too as alcohol reduces b vitamin and leads to neuropathy.
Other possibilities are arsenic or mercury poisoning , sarcoidosis, SLE , amyloidoasis etc but the odds are highly unlikely for them.
Get to your neurologist and let them decide what it is.
I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself and don't forget to close the discussion please.
May the odds be ever in your favour.

If compression to the hands was caused by repetitive activity, in my case carrying
gallon bottles of water out to my garden, will the tingling go away when this activity stops? The bottles have wide plastic bands attached as handles and they do press down on my fingers weighing about 8 pounds each. If the tingling is caused by a spinal or sciatic problem what can be done to relieve the problem?

Well that much weight lifting at this age is definitely a predisposing factor. Stopping that activity is advised. Compressive neuropathy is likely. In case of vertebral compressions, rest and conservative measurements and physiotherapy exercises and nutritional supplements like vitamin B12 and antioxidants etc.
Get to a neurologist and let them take care of the possible cause here.
I hope it helps.
Good Luck
