What Causes Tightness In Chest?

Posted on Mon, 28 Jul 2014
Question: Had an angiogram done due to experiencing PVC's that had me needing to go to ER. Results were negative, ultrasound also looked good. Started me on a beta blocker that I did not respond to. All this was about a month ago now. Am taking the following in the morning once a day - Proxen 500mg, and Coversyl 2.5mg. In the afternoon I take Cordarone 200mg, and Allopurinol 300mg. The Coversyl and Cordarone are for my heart and The other two are to manage my gout. I was not on any medication until this point. I also never had any chest pains or pressure until now. To test the waters I have been running 2.5 to 3 miles, have done 30 minutes on a rowing machine. One hour sessions on an elliptical, and done some cycling. No issues while exercising, but have started feeling tightness in mainly my left upper chest into my lower left neck. Feels like I need to stretch out my chest. Had the symptoms yesterday morning. Went away last night, having them again today for most of the afternoon and evening. Not getting worse, just present and annoying. I was cleared by the cardiologist to return to work, and a follow up ECG was clear too.

Brief Answer:
Should run holter monitoring...

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

I have gone through your medical history and understood your concerns.

Apart angiogram, I advise to run holter monitoring to rule out major arrhythmia. If everything is ok, then all your symptoms are indicative for Gout attack.

Until the results of holter monitoring are in, I highly advise to take anti-inflammatory drugs.

Hope it was of help! Do write me back if you have further questions!

Already on anti-inflammatory as listed in my original question. Wondering if there are any drug interaction side effects going on, or if what I am feeling is due to one of the medications I am taking. Have not had any gout in four weeks.

Brief Answer:
No signs of interaction seen...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

So far, no signs of interaction between drugs you are taking is noted.

I have noticed that you are using proxen 500 mg; As one of the side effects of this medication is to increase blood pressure, I advise to add another anti-inflammatory drug on daily basis (e.g. Tylenol) that won't have such effect and will ease the chest pain.

I am happy that you did not experience any gout attack for four weeks. The use of anti-inflammatory drugs together with lifestyle and diet changes will help keep gout under control.

Once again, I advise to run holter monitoring as advised earlier to exclude arrhythmia problems.

Hope it answered to your queries!
