What Causes Swollen Lymph Nodes Under Jaw?

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Dec 2014
Question: Hi I have had swollen lymph nodes under my jaw in my neck above my collar bone in my armpits and my groin for about a year now.. I have been to 5 doctors from infectious disease, ENT, and an oncologist. They have run a battery of tests for all autoimmune diseases, infections, bacterial and viral as well as hep C and B STD's and HIV. I had deciminated mat Herpies on my back a year ago when many of the nodes came up. I have had 2 core biopsies of the nodes as well as 2 ct scans the biopsies came back as reactive hyperplasia and folicar hyperplasia. The only things found on the ct scans were low density liver lesions to small to characterize as well as one on my left kidney too small to characterize as well that was it. I have developed severe anxiety because of this. They cannot find a cause for the lymph nodes. I am worried sick that a cancer of some sort is hiding... I feel like it will be too late when they find it and I will die. Please help me to accept that I cannot get an answer to the cause and forget about it being the end of me. Thank you.. By the way I am a 33 year old female and am now 3 months pregnant.

Brief Answer:
PET scan

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I have gone through your history.

I would advise you to do a PET scan to find the cause of swollen lymph nodes.

Biopsy has to be done from the largest space occupying lesion in the scan to rule out any sort of malignancy.

The oncologist I have been seeing for a year now will not do a PET scan he says that the ct scans were normal and he believes nothing is wrong. The biopsies were negative for malignancy as well. Why would you recommend a PET scan then? The CT scans were 6 months apart and the lesions were unchanged in size.

Brief Answer:
swollen lymph nodes are not always a sign of an underlying disease.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Infections are the most common causes of swollen lymph nodes.

Common infectious causes of swollen lymph nodes are viral, bacterial, parasites, and fungal. The most common cause of swollen lymph nodes is viral upper respiratory infections such as the common cold.

I will advise you to do a blood culture test and if any growth is found then it has to be teated with sensitive antibiotics.

Since you are having swollen lymph nodes under your jaw your neck above your collar bone in your armpits and your groin for about a year now and you are not having tenderness, fever, sore throat, red, warm, swollen skin over the lymph node and your CT scan and biopsy showed no cancerous cells you do not need to worry.

It is also important to mention that swollen lymph nodes are not always a sign of an underlying disease. Sometimes they can be normal.

DR DE

Brief Answer:
Nothing to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi

It is important to understand that lymph nodes in the neck above your collar bone in your armpits and your groin area can be eaily felt.

Because you can feel them when you check for them does not mean they are swollen rather that they are normal.

The glands should go back to their normal size as time goes on.

I will advise you to apply a warm, wet washcloth to the area you are feeling is swollen.

You are absolutely fine and you do not need to worry.

Wishing you good health.
