What Causes Swollen Area On The Left Side Of Head?

default
Posted on Mon, 13 Apr 2015
Question: My girlfriend has a swollen area on the left side of her head. It is at the base of the neck and behind the ear. We just noticed it and she has been fine with no previous symptoms till we started to think about it. She had a cold about a week ago and until now finding this bump we didn't think her not getting tast back to be an issue, but now we are wondering of symptoms of something else. As well as the no taste she has had a migraine today and it's persistent. Not overwhelming, but causing nausea. Been stress the last few months as going through a lot which could be cause. The bump itself is swollen about the size of grape. It is only sensitive when touched. Lastly, she has had dryness almost like a scab on her scalp as well. Any idea of what this could be? We are seeing everything from shingles, to lymph node issues, and about anything at all. Thanks for input.

Brief Answer:
Swelling is likely to be Lymph node

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day
Dear Mr XXXXXXX

From the description and location of bump it's very much likely to be Lymph node swelling (post auricular lymph node ). As it's site of lymph node , any swelling arising in this location is likely to be due to lymph node unless proved otherwise.
As the size of node is size of grape the node is not significantly enlarged. The dryness of scalp is likely to be due to seborrhoeic dermatitis.

I would suggest you the following

1. Local application of antidandruff shampoo. This should solve the issue of seborrhoeic dermatitis. The lymph node swelling is likely to subside

2. Hot water fomentation

If the swelling still persist them do consult your Physician for further clinical examination and assessment.

Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.
Take care
