Posted on Wed, 10 Feb 2016
Question: My husband was taking a prednisone pill for five days starting December 29. Now he has swelling in his lower legs, ankles, feet, and hands. He is resting, taking 1 mg of bumex in the morning as prescribed, and using oxygen. Should I just relax and let the bumex work?

Brief Answer:
If no breathing difficulties, then, should wait and see if Bumex is working..

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand your concern.

Taking into account the medical history of your husband, if I was his caring doctor would determine what the cause to his edema was:
- prednisone use?
- liver/kidney disease?
- high blood pressure (bp)?
- or any other problem?

Bumex he is taking is a diuretic (water) pill, which will help remove the excessive water that has caused swelling.

If he has no other health problem, such as high bp or difficulty in breathing, I advise to wait for a few more days to see if it will really work. If no improvement, then, should send him back to his doctor and try to find out the real cause and treat it adequately.

Remember to advise him to avoid salty/processed/oily foods until improvement.

Wish fast recovery!
