default
Posted on Mon, 29 Jun 2015
Question: Hi Doc. I have been on Evista I think for about 5 years. Recently I have had difficulty swallowing but only when I'm talking ,eating and drinking/. Its seems I have anxiety when this happens because we are talking about work and kids etc. High stress. Actually I told my doctor and he he suggested an endoscopy because I COULD HAVE CANCER!!! Scared me to death because I am a smoker. But for my doctor of 14 years says this without really asking me questions, I was relly upset and think that was uncalled for. Please help and thank you.

Brief Answer:
Its really to early to think about the cancer.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Cancer diagnosis at this point is a hasty idea. Smoking can lead to esophagus cancer. This is true. As well as lungs cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer, pancreas cancer, breast cancer, large intestine cancer and probably many more.
But this does not mean you will have any of this cancers.

Bonviva is a medicine which can cause stomach and esophagus inflammation. Chronic inflammation can give difficulty with swallowing as well. Anxiety also is a know factor of swallowing problems.

So you should keep calm and have gastroscopy done. Do not think about the cancer. It wont change anything right now.

And for your further healthy, you should should consider quit smoking. And for sure you should have chest CT every 2 years to rule out lungs cancer.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

The question I wanted answered -- should I stop taking evista. I really do gave a feeling that it is the cause of my problems. Including leg cramps that I associate with blot clots forming after this long on eVista.

Brief Answer:
Do not quit Evista.

Detailed Answer:
Evista is a good medicine. Do not quit it. First of all you need to have gastroscopy done. We really do not know if there are any changes in esophagus.
Leg cramps are not characteristic symptom of blood clots. Cramps are rather caused by ions deficiency. Please start Magnesium and Potassium suplementation. This should help with cramps.
