Question: Dear Sir,

I was a very heavy drinker from 2008 to 2012 and after which it is reduced to weekly once or twice affair with heavy drinking for two days. Currently i am feeling stiffness on the left side of my neck where in i dont feel any pain but i feel like something is kept there. i also feel pain on my left knee which usualy spreds to joints on my toes and joints on my fingers the very next day of heavy drinking. These pains usually resolve after two days of abstinance from alcohol. Kindly advice the following:

(1) What is the reason of these symptoms
(2) Is there any issues of concern
(3) I heard that hodgkin / non hodgkin lymphoma is having similar symptoms. Is it true?

Brief Answer:
Not suffering from lymphoma

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Some people report pain in their joints, especially their knees and wrists, after drinking alcohol. However, researchers have not be able to identify a link between alcohol consumption and joint pain. Studies instead suggest that obesity is more often associated with joint pain than any lifestyle factors such as alcohol consumption or smoking. Nevertheless, there are some ways that alcohol might indirectly contribute to joint pain.

Heavy alcohol use is a risk factor for gout, an inflammatory condition of the joints caused by a buildup of uric acid in the body. Gout is painful, and it commonly occurs in your feet and knees. Alcohol consumption also can promote weight gain, which in turn puts an extra strain on the bones and joints, causing joint pain and increasing the risk of osteoarthritis.

You should not be concerned.I will advise you to take paracetamol tablets twice daily.

Lymphoma presents with painless swelling of lymph nodes in your neck, armpits or groin and you are not suffering from the disease.
