What Causes Slight Blood Discharge From Penis And Red Discoloration Of Urine?

default
Posted on Wed, 1 Jul 2015
Question: I am a male, age 72, in generally good health with a mild type 2 diabetic condition (not on medication). I have been taking 20 mg. of a generic statin for cholesterol for 6 or 7 years. 4 months ago, I started taking 2.5 mg. of ramipril. On 4 separate occasions over the last 6 weeks I have had small blood discharges from my penis that have left spots in my under ware. On two of these occasions, I also noticed a slight red discoloration in my urine. Last night, when I urinated, I saw a "clot" of blood in the toilet. I have not recognized any other symptoms.
I made an appointment with a Urologist, but it is 3 weeks from now. What could be causing this? Should I be seeking more immediate treatment?

Brief Answer:
Likely to be a cause in the bladder - probably a tumor

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr. XXXX,
Good evening. I went through your query and noted the contents and i understand how concerned you must be.

Being on statin or ACEI like ramipril does not cause hematuria (blood in the urine). So drugs need not be an area of concern.

You have been noticing the spotting of urine for about 6 weeks now and that is quite a significant duration of time. Last night you have seen a clot of blood too. The concern here is that it is painless.

Few causes of blood in the urine can be renal stones, a bladder infection, infection at the level of the kidneys, trauma and cancer. As you don't have any associated symptoms like fever infection can be excluded to an extent. Renal stones would cause pain and you will know when it passes through. In view of your age, a growth in the bladder is highly likely.

You will need to see an urologist as you have decided. Apart from a routine blood workup you will need a cystoscopy. That will in all likelihood give us a lead.

I will be happy to answer any more queries if need be. Wishing you the best of health.
Warm regards,
Dr Praveen Jeyapathy
