What Causes Sharp Stabbing Pain In The Upper Right Side Of Abdomen?

default
Posted on Tue, 5 May 2015
Question: Hi, I have noticed a very short, sharp stabbing pain in the upper right side of my abdomen. It is up the the edge of my rib cage. It only lasts for about one second and then goes away and it happens every 10 minutes or so. It started about 12 hours ago, it did not interrupt my sleep last night and it is continuing this morning. (it probably a 5-6 on a scale of 10 for pain). I don't have a fever that I know of and I'm not taking any medications of any kind. I'm male, 5'9", 270 lbs and 52 years old. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Gallstones need to be checked for, ultrasound recommended

Detailed Answer:
Dear Patient,

when somesone with your symptoms comes to my office:

1.) i do an ultrasound abdomen first to rule out gallstones and gallbladderinflammation (cholecystitis) or a pancreas/ liver condition. In addition i recommend blood work for inflammation (not always with fever), rgarding liver, gallbladder, pancreas.

2.) If it is not that another possibility is kidney stones, often to small to be detected in ultrasound, low dose cat scan advisable to rule that out.

If it is not one of the 2 possibilities above, then it can also come from the lungs, like inflammation of lung or pleurisy (also not always with fever) i rule that out with chest x ray.

Hope this is helping you , if you have any clarificatons you can get back to me, if this was helpful please kindly rate my answer. Best regards
