What Causes Sharp Pain In The Left Groin Area?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Mar 2015
Question: Good afternoon Dr, yes I hope you can advise . For the last few days when I have got out of my car have had a sharp pain in the left groin area. I though it was my pubic hair caught in my under wear, sorry to be basic. Today I have trimmed it and can feel a slight bulge under the hair. Could this just be a muscle strain or should I go the surgery if it does not go. Apart from that I feel fine.

Brief Answer:
Inguinal hernia is possible.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Bulge in groin along with pain are symptoms of inguinal hernia. The bulge should be less visible when lying down and more visible when standing. The pain should get more intense when coughing or lifting heavy objects.
Strained muscle is also possible. However the pain is located where the tight meets the groin (lower than hernia). There should be no bulge present. Pain should not get worse when coughing.

Its too early to tell about possible surgery. First of all you need to consult general surgeon and have physical examination done. In case of doubts, ultrasound should be done.
Hernia should be fixed with surgery. Strained muscle pain will go away by its own.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Hi Dr.

Thank you for your reply. What can cause this? I don't feel any pain when I have lifted anything, just this sharp pain as I get out of the car.

Many thanks.

Brief Answer:
Sometimes hernia appears without any reason.

Detailed Answer:
Some hernias do not appear for any particular reason. In some causes the reason is cough or constipation (pushing hard on stool).
Sharp pain can be the only symptoms.
