Question: My mother is 92 and has developed severe pain and spasms in the left hip, the side of leg to knee, and left groin pain inside the leg almost to vaginal area. Sometime it spasms on and off and very severe. It is almost impossible to lift her left leg off the ground due to pain. When she coughs , it hurts in the groin area , left side. Sitting down really hurts and its hard to find a comfortable position when sitting. When she is Standing and walking slow most if the time is not
painful. She had an mri of the left hip yesterday and dont know results yet. The pain is excruciating .She had sn epidural steroid injection 10 days ago at L4-5, but it was NO help. When it is bad, and spasming, her left foot and leg will jerk off the ground about 3 inches and then return.Id would like to know your impression of the source of this nerve pain.

Brief Answer:
Get back with mri report

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through your question and understand your concern.
At this age, pain in lower limb or hip region can be due to lumbar disc prolapse or hip pathology like necrosis or fracture.
Imaging of hip and spine will be helpful in making a diagnosis.
At present pain killers with muscle relaxant like aceclofenac or diclofenac with tizanidine or thiocholchicoside can be taken.
Avoid stooping forward, lifting heavy objects, sitting crossed leg.
Get back with report.
Hope you found the answer helpful.

Dr the hip mri was normal . My mom has this pain in her left hip area down the side of the leg, down into the groin area almost to the vaginal area and deep into the buttocks muscles . The act of sitting down is painful and finding a comfortable position is tough. Once she finds the position or gets past the pain from this nerve, she can get rest. The neurologist we use has no other ideas.... prescribed gabbapentin ( neurontin) for nerve pain and recommended physical therapy ...
For mother, walking and being on her feet doesnt cause much pain at all! Can you recommend where to go or what to do. Im so worried. Shes only 5 ft tall and is 112 pounds. Has one kidney. Age 92

Brief Answer:
Get investigated as advised

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
If hip mri is normal, then possibility of lumbosacral radiculopathy due to disc prolapse is to be considered.
Mri of lumbosacral spine is required.
Rule out any gynecological abnormalities.
Continue treatment as advised.
The dose of gabapentin can be increased gradually.
