Posted on Fri, 3 Jul 2015
Question: Good morning -- my son periodically gets severe leg soreness -- in his upper thigh area and joints and it effects his ability to walk and move without assistance. We have tried hydrating, motrin, advil and bananas. This occurs a few times a year over the past 2 or so years. Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Features are suggestive of Periodic paralysis.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX Ma'am, Hi
I appreciate your concern for your son's illness.

I have gone through his problems described in your query, I am of the opinion that he is likely to be suffering from a condition known as "Periodic paralysis".
It is a type of muscle disease characterized by episodes of flaccid muscle weakness occurring at irregular intervals with normal strength between the attacks and usually precipitated by cold exposure, rest after exercise, and fasting.

I advise you to consult a pediatrician for proper evaluation and workup like estimation of serum potassium level, electromyographic studies (EMG), and ECG.

Hope the suggestions given above could be of great help in diagnosing his condition and an appropriate treatment begins soon to improve his weakness.

Wishing your son a very good health.
Note: For further queries, consult a joint and bone specialist, an Orthopaedic surgeon. Book a Call now.
