What Causes Severe Headaches After I Woke Up?

default
Posted on Tue, 27 Jan 2015
Question: My symptoms started with sharp headache on the top for few seconds and then it came back on top and temples. I went to doctor and he saw inflammation in both my ears, sore throat and a little fever. I was given Cipro 500 and Mucinex D for Two weeks, twice a day. Its been three weeks now. My throat is better but my headache and earache (In both ears) remains. The headache is sharp and lasts few seconds and it triggers hours after I wake up and stays. Same with the ear pain. I am going to see doctor tomorrow again. I just need a second opinion about what could be the next step. Its been weeks and I am starting to feel anxious. He said I have sinus infection but I am not congested.

Brief Answer:
The next step would be CT scan and endoscopy

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Since your symptoms have not resolved for 2 weeks it is advisable that you meet your ENT doctor, to rule out a possible sinus involvement.

He will ask you to do a CT scan of your nose and sinuses and may do an endoscopy of the nose to look for extent of sinus involvement.

Your ear symptoms and headache both can be attributed to your sinus involvement and will resolve one it is treated.

In the meantime you can start steam inhalation 2-3 times a day and avoid exposure to air pollution and dusty environment.

Take care

Hello Dr.,
Thank you. I went to the doctor today and he has ordered a sinus CT. He looked in my ears and told me that the eardrums are bulging. He prescribed me with two more weeks of antibiotics, Cipro 500. My question is, Do you think the headache is caused by sinus/ ear infection? My headache is near temples and its short burst, lasts of few seconds. Multiple times. Its on sides mostly.

Thank you again for your advise. It helped.

Brief Answer:
Yes, it is possible!

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Headache can be due to many reasons like sinus infection, migraine etc. However since you also had fever and throat pain, it would be wise to consider sinus congestion as the primary cause for your headache.

CT scan of the sinus is the next most appropriate investigation and since your ear drums are bulging, which is due to infection, ciprofloxacin is a good drug and I would recommend that you take it as advised by your doctor.

Take care!!
