Brief Answer: different aspects of treatment Detailed Answer: HI, thanks for using healthcare magic Ringing in the ears is called tinnitus. Other persons can also buzzing, roaring, hissing, humming. There are different causes: (1) associated with hearing loss (2) side effect of medications- aspirin and aspirin containing drugs cause tinnitus, diuretics such as furosemide, there are other medications that have this effect as well (3)meniere's disease (4)tumor (5)infections of the ear (6)loud noises (7)anemia and thyroid disease can cause tinnitus in some persons In term of treatment: (1) if it due to an obvious reversible cause such as ear infection, anemia, thyroid disease then these can be treated and the problem will resolve (2) Medications- Nortriptyline (50mg at night) is one of the more effective drug treatments. It can take 3 to 4 weeks before it has an effect (3) other aspects of treatment are:- (a)Tinnitus maskers- these resemble hearing aids and create a low level of white noise (b)biofeedback -it has been found that the psychological state may contribute to tinnitus in some persons. This therapy reduces stress and anxiety associated with tinnitus. Has been used for over 25 yrs Your ENT doctor may be able to assess you to determine if it due to a reversible cause. He or she would also be able to initiate therapy to help you. I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
