Question: Hi! I have severe laryngitis and fever, and have been prescribe Augmentine Duo. I started on the medication yesterday. By evening, my face and chest turned red. I am also being treated for non-alcoholic fatty liver and cholesterol. Do I discontinue Augmentine? And what about the rash?

Brief Answer:
Stop Augmentin . Use Calamine Lotion over the rash

Detailed Answer:
HI
Thanks for posting your query to HCM .

Augmentin contains Amoxycillin with Clavunate . This drug is known to cause allergic reactions in many people especially in those who are allergic to penicillin . I personally feel that your redness of face and chest is due to Augmentin induced allergic reaction.

Also one more possibility is that the reaction occurred due to possible interaction between the Augmentin and your Liver and cholesterol medications ( You have not mentioned what are those medications. Knowing them would have made it easier to tell if any such interactions are possible or not )

Whatever the reason is , you need to stop Augmentin as continued usage may cause even serious reactions . I advise you to ask your doctor to prescribe Levofloxacin or Azithromycin as an alternative to Augmentin .

Also next time when any doctor prescribes you an antibiotic make him know that you are allergic to Augmentin .

Coming to the rash it will go off in 2-3 days by itself . But if it's too itchy you can apply Calamine lotion over it 2 times a day for 2-3 days .

Hope my answer was helpful to you . Any further queries kindly feel free to ask .

Dear doc,
Thanks for your reply. As there was some issue at HCM's end with replying to my query posted day before yesterday, I started on Ezithral 500 day before. I also started on an Allegra 120 a day. So, with your prescribing the same antibiotic, I am glad I switched to Ezithral.
The point to note is that I have had Mox in the past. Perhaps it is the Clovunate, or perhaps a contraindication with my liver and cholesterol medicines: Heptral, Vitamin E, and Rosulip. I have been having a Nexpro 20 a day for 8 years now. My LDL has hovered around 150 to 180 for the last several years, but my SGPT/SGOT have always been normal. Earlier this month, however, I found my SGPT to be 106, and SGOT around 50. A fibroscan of my liver showed there is no fibrosis, just a lot of fat. I seldom drink, I go for brisk walks, but I had been eating a lot of junk food. But is that reason enough for the spike in SGPT/SGOT levels? Anyway, the more pertinent question at this point is whether all this could have added to give me the urticaria... Which is still not gone on the 3rd day?

Brief Answer:
NO Urticaria is due to Augmentin.

Detailed Answer:
HI
Thanks for the follow up .

I feel your Urticaria is due to Augmentin only and not due to any interaction with your previous medication. Good that you changed to Azithromycin .

Your elevation is SGPT is not due to eating junk food but it's due to your cholesterol medicine Rosulip . Since your SGPT is mildly elevated , you can still continue Rosulip .

Last advise is to stop eating junk food as it will contribute to elevated LDL levels.

Your rash may persists for few more days , don't worry . It will fade gradually .

I started Rosulip a week back, along with Heptal and Vitamin E - But that was after I found my SGPT levels were high. So, Rosulip could not have caused it. Before that I was on no mediciation, except Nexpro 20.

To get my dates right, I got my blood reports on 2 August. Saw that my cholesterol and SGPT were high, and was started on Heptral, Rosulip and Vitamin E around the 4th of August - not a week back, as inadvertently mentioned in my previous response.

Brief Answer:
Rosulip not the cause of raised SGPT

Detailed Answer:
HI

In that case Rosulip is not causing your raised SGPT. It's just due to fatty liver disease . But Rosulip can increase liver enzymes so kindly repeat SGOT, SGPT after 2 months .

Anyhow you can continue all your liver and cholesterol medications .

Repeat your Lipid Profile after 6 months .
