What Causes Rash Around Wound Area?

default
Posted on Tue, 4 Nov 2014
Question: Two weeks ago, I broke my ankle in three places and had to have surgery. The surgeon had to put pins in my ankle. I went back a couple of days ago and he removed the cast and now I am in a boot. My problem is, I have developed a rash on my leg around the wound area and it itches bad. The rash seems to under the skin more so than on top of the skin, it that makes any sense. There is no fever around the wound area and it is healing nicely. Could this be an infection or is my body rejecting the pins that were put in the ankle? I am concerned.

Brief Answer:
Unlikely infection unless there is fever, pain.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your query.

I'm Dr. Sudhir Kumar,

After going through your query I came to know that you got fractured your ankle (Potts fracture) for which pins were placed by surgeon. You have developed a rash around wound area but are not having fever and you have not mentioned about pain. If you can upload a photo of the lesions I will be better able to help.

If you have no fever and pain then it is unlikely to be having infection. Itching can occur in initial phase of healing phase. You can take cetrizine for itching. Rash is cause of concerned but no need to worry much till there is swelling ,fever or pain. Antiinflamatory such as Diclofenac can be taken for reducing inflammation of rash.

You can discuss with your treating Doctor about it.

Hope I have answered your query.
If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.

Wishing you good health.
Take care.
