What Causes Persistent UTI While On Urispas?

default
Posted on Sat, 9 Apr 2016
Question: Hi there. I have been diagnosed with lower UTI and been given antibiotics for 10 days and muscle and spasm tablets called urispas 200 (South XXXXXXX drug). The main ingredient is Flavoxate hydrochloide. I have been on both 7 days now and although the symptoms are not any worse they haven't gone away totally. I also had a Prostate cancer test done and it came back negative. Please could you let me know whether I am in to much of a hurry for things to improve. PS: I suffer from BPH for 10 years now. I am 58 years old. I also had a piece of my prostate removed to help with the BPH. Thanking you.

Brief Answer:
Obstructive urinary causes need to be evaluated.

Detailed Answer:
Hello xxxxxxx and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist, i can fully understand your concern.

You've undergone a surgery in the past, to relieve you of prostate enlargement.

You should've mentioned when the surgery was done and if it was it a TURP.

The course of antibiotics you've taken so far, is sufficient to take care of the U.T.I.
but, the U.T.I. may recur, if there's obstruction in the lower urinary tract.

You will need to be evaluated for persisting urinary obstruction.
The following evaluation needs to be done, for a proper advice.

Consult an Urologist, for a rectal examination(DRE).
You'll need to have tests like :
1. Urine routine and culture test.
2. Blood routine,creatinine, HbA1C,FBS,and electrolytes.
3. Uroflowmetry test.
4. ultrasound scan of abdomen and pelvis, with residual urine.
5. TRUS (trans rectal ultrasound).

According to these reports, an expert opinion can be given.
Drink 8-10 glasses fluids daily.
Exercise and diabetic diet are very important, and follow it strictly.
Avoid drinking water at night.
Wish you well.

Hi there Doctor and thank you for your advise. Just to answer I had my TURP surgery in 2009. I just have a question for you. If I indeed do have obstruction in the lower urinary tract, how serious is this and will it need further surgery. I have had 2 heart attacks recently and have 2 stents in my heart. I am very worried about any general surgery unless it is life treating. My other concern is a the tests you mention. It all sounds like this is very serious. I was hi jacked in 1999, and had to have life threatening brain surgery, and now suffer from neurological disorders like epilepsy and memory loss. As you can see I don't have a good medical record and I am on 12 pills a day for anxiety, stress, depression etc. Could you please advise on these issues. Thanking you.xxxxxxxxx

Brief Answer:
High risk for any major surgery.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.

The exact nature of your urinary obstruction, can be assessed only by the tests, i mentioned and correlate with your symptoms.

Looking at the reports,i can give you an expert advice.
It's not a serious problem, unless your kidney function is affected.
So do the tests anyway, for your safety and further treatment.

Surgery is out of question, with your medical conditions.
There're many medical treatments available, for prostate gland obstruction.

So be relaxed and send the reports when ready.
Wish you good health.
