Question: I am pregnant 5 weeks. I have pain in my vagina and feel like need to poo all the time but I do not to. I have asked already and the Dr said it was normal. I have a early pregnancy scan and test everything is fine. But I am worried because the pain is more noticeable when I am laying down in each one of my sides. I am taking paracetamol 500 my every 6 hours, but I don't want to take it all the time until next appointment in two weeks with my doctor. Also this morning I had sex with my husband and was a little bit painful. Not much but like irritating inside. No smelly discharge, not itching. But the pain is there vagina/ Anus area. It is normal?

Brief Answer:
Likely to be increased pelvic congestion.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.

Your symptom seems to be likely due to the increased pelvic congestion as a result of the enlarging uterus. As the uterus enlarges, the supporting ligaments are stretched and this gives a pulling sensation along side the uterus. Pain in the vagina can also be due to the pressure on the cervix.

If you have a retroverted uterus which can be observed in the sonogram, please use the prone position until another 2-3 weeks while you take rest. This will help the uterus to grow at a proper angle and as it comes out of the pelvis by 10-12 weeks, you need not use this position any more. Also, when the uterus is retroverted, the ovaries often prolapse into the pouch of XXXXXXX and this causes pain on both sides.

If, on the other hand, you do not have a retroverted uterus, prone position should not be taken while at rest.

Please ask your doctor if you can take an anti-spasmodic for pain relief. Avoid unnecessary medication.

Avoid intercourse until you enter the second trimester of pregnancy. Also avoid lifting weights and excessive movement.

Hope your query has been clarified. Please feel free to contact for further information. I will be happy to help.

I don't know if I have retroverted uterus, I have done a early pregnancy scan and the doctor said everything was right. So, I assume if she saw something, she had told, hadn't she? No pain on my ovaries at all. And when I am much comfortable is standing or walking. I

Brief Answer:
Can ask your sonographer.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing back.

You can know if the position of the uterus was observed during the sonogram by asking the sonographer for the details. You can also ask your consultant. Having a retroverted uterus is not an abnormal finding. It is just that due to the position, the uterus may sometimes get wedged as it tries to push upward and outward and the techniques mentioned help to correct this problem.

You feel more comfortable while standing or walking when there is pelvic congestion as this natural. Pressure on the pelvis increases when you sit.

Hope this helps. Please get back if you need more help. I will be glad to do so.

regards,
Shanti.V.
