Posted on Mon, 22 Sep 2014
Question: I have pain in my mid back, neck, tissue around my right knee and right ankle. I experience pain in my shoulder as well. I have also have episodes of passing out, migraines and tension headaches. I was told I have narrowing in C5-C7 and hemangioma on T7. I also have mild scoliosis and my right leg is shorter than my left. Is the pain in my right leg and right ankle related to this condition. What are the best methods to treat all of these conditions?

Brief Answer:
Can be due to osteoarthritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain in the right leg and right ankle could be due to scoliosis or abnormal posture or osteoarthritis or calcium deficiency.
The degenerative changes in the spine are responsible for the pain in neck and back.
For the pain in right knee and right ankle the treatment options include pain killers, hot fomentation, lubricating agents like glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin , dycerin, etc and some life style modifications and physiotherapy.
Right now you can start taking Tablet Tylenol ( Acetaminophen) Double Strength after breakfast and after dinner. It is suggested to add calcium supplements 500mg each twice daily. Get the proper lubricating agents prescribed from your orthopedician.
For neck pain
- Wear a cervical collar. This will at least give rest to your strained muscles.
-Avoid bending your neck at abnormal position for long time, like on computer.
-Do warm water fomentation with help of water bag over your neck.
-Test for levels of vitamin B12, If low do take Vitamin B12 supplements.
-Take help of a physiothearpist .He will be able to give your relief by intermittent traction, ultrasonic therapy etc.
I hope this answers your query.

Hi Dr. Tayal, Thank you for your quick response and helpful feedback. I was just wondering if surgery was a good option to treat the neck and back pain? I am concerned about this being a permanent disability that will affect my work and livelihood. For most of my life, I have had jobs that require me to sit at a desk in front of a computer. Should I avoid certain sports as well (i.e., swimming, walking, running)? Although walking and running is difficult now because of the pain. However, I would prefer to stay active.

Sincerely,
doctor

Brief Answer:
Continue with exercises.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Surgical treatment is considered if there is a severe nerve root compression. Surgery will reduce the compression that is already there but will not stop the further progression of the degenerative changes of the spine. Exercise and physiotherapy are the only long term beneficial activities.
It is best to delay the surgery with the help of medicines and neck exercise.
Walking, swimming and light aerobics are the best exercises for you.
Hope my answer is helpful.
