What Causes Pain In Abdomen Followed By Loose Bowel Movement?

default
Posted on Mon, 4 May 2015
Question: Yesterday i had extreme labor like pain in my entire abdomen and one lose bowl movement. It has subsided greatly but my lower right abdomen near the hip is still a bit sore to pressure. I can walk, run , etc. with little to no issue. I was recently diagnosed with a cyst on my ovary and told it was not an issue. Someone else also suggested this could be my appendix. Should i worry?

Brief Answer:
Please find details below

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. Since you had pain in abdomen followed by one loos bowel movement, it is most likely to be a mild bowel infection. Please take care of the food you eat and water you drink and keep yourself comfortable form any contamination. Such a pain should disappear completely in 3 to 5 days.

2. The ovary cyst details are not mentioned concerning size and location. Should it be on the right side and measuring more than 3 cm in diameter then it might cause some amount of pain and discomfort in the right lower abdomen.

3. Pain due to appendix is severe in nature and will be persistently felt in right lower abdomen. The pain due to appendix is more on pressing deeply over the skin and can bring a person to tears. If you do not have such a severe pain then there is no need to worry for an appendix.

4. Appendix is more of a clinical diagnosis and in most cases is made by the surgeon after clinical examination. Only about half the patients having appendicitis have a positive finding on ultrasound scan. Therefore should the pain follow a severe pattern and bring you to tears then a consultation with a surgeon is suggested.

5. There are other causes of pain in right lower abdomen like lymph node enlargement, bowel wall inflammation, diverticulitis. If pain persists for longer than a week or is felt at regular intervals then please get clinically examined by a surgeon.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
