default
Posted on Thu, 17 Aug 2017
Question: My wife who is home maker is of 47 year old and her weight is 50kgs. Of-late she started having pain on her left foot big toe. This occurs when she stands for quite sometime. Also when pain is severe that place gets swelling also. We have consulted physician who conducted following tests

1. Blood - CBC,LFT,URIC ACID,TSH and RPT
2. Urine test

Also an x-ray was taken to check any fracture.

Both Blood and Urine reports are normal (within range) only.

Further

a. started giving hot-water fomentation to the affected area daily twice which reduced pain for few hours.
b. started using soft chappal at home as well to reduce weight on feet.

In this regard I have following questions

1. since x-ray does not show any bone damage orthopedic is not the right specialty for this problem is my assumption. So which specialist do I need to consult.
2. What are probable reasons for this issue.
3. Any recommendations for pain relief

Brief Answer:
several possibilities can be there..further evaluation by Orthopedician needed

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX Welcome to HealthcareMagic,
I've gone through your query and understand the concern for your wife,

Coming directly to your concerns,

1. X-ray is not conclusive to show fine/tiny fractures (notably Stress fractures), so in that case, an MRI may be planned after a detailed examination of the affected foot. MRI will also reveal other structural injuries(ligaments and muscles) if any. You need to consult the Orthopedician only as they're the relevant specialty dealing with this.

2. Exact diagnosis can only be confirmed after a thorough clinical followed by radiological imaging investigations. Several possibilities (notably the stress fractures, sprains/pulled muscles/ligaments, inflammations etc.) can be threre...

3. Apart from those remedies which she's taking presently, she can take mild pain-killer like Tab PARACETAMOL 650mg twice to thrice daily (after some food) for the time being...try not to engage in any kind of strenuous activities...

Not to worry, but go ahead for the further evaluations...Wish her a good health...
