What Causes Numbness And Pain In Left Arm?

Posted on Sat, 7 Jun 2014
Question: I am a 51 year old man..about 20 pounds overweight but active as far as going to the gym on a regular basis. At night when I lay down I start to get a bit of numbness in my left arm that comes and goes..also get weird pains in that arm as well...just a sudden pain...sometimes in my bycept..sometimes my forearm that are not related to the gym as I don't lift on a regular basis.I looked at the symptoms for a stroke and I have no facial twitches, headaches, blurry vision or confusion..I do get an occasional sharp pain in my chest as well. There is no history of this type in my family.Needless to say this freaks me out a bit..I take gabapentin for back pain(surgery 12 years ago) and amitriptilyne sometimes as a prescribed sleep aid.I do not experience these symptoms in the daytime..bp is around 135/85.....should I be concerned?

Hello,
Thanks for the query.
I will answer your queries one by one.
Occasional numbness could be postural or it could be due deficiency of VIT B 12,calcium etc.Get yourself tested for VIT B12 as well as VIT D and calcium.

These are not the symptoms of stroke as you yourself has described it.

Occasional sharp pain in chest lasting for few seconds and unaccompanied by any sweating, uneasiness etc should not be a heart pain, however it is better to consult a cardiologist and get ruled out any heart ailment . A normal cardiac report shall help in removing doubts from your mind and bring peace to you.
I hope it helps, however you may revert to me for any further query.
Best of luck
Thanks
