What Causes Neck Pain After A Dental Procedure?

default
Posted on Thu, 7 Sep 2017
Question: Hi my name is Bruce and i am 17.
for the past year, i have been experiencing neck muscle tightness in the front of my neck. this is not the typical neck pain in the back of my neck and i never experienced the typical neck pain symptoms of pain going down my arms. i went to many doctors and specialists, took x rays, 2 different ENT'S, and none of them could give me a definitive answer. i went to 5 months of physical therapy working on posture and form but i still continued to feel tightness throughout the sternoclomastoid. recently, i was referred to a voice specialist to learn how to talk without engaging the neck muscles and that seems to be pretty successful. he also taught me that when the neck muscles feel tight i should contract them even more and then slowly release them teaching the brain how to calm the muscles. this definitely helped calm the muscles of the sternoclomastoid near the throat but i still feel extreme tightness in the muscles above the clavicle (collarbone). i feel the tightness especially after i workout and i have taken numerous exercises that may engage the neck out of my regimen. but i still feel like im recruiting these muscles when im working out ( for example: lifting my arms above my head creates tightness in the muscles above the clavicle) . i heard that wisdom teeth can cause neck pain and im not sure if its the neck pain and tightness that im describing. i just went to my dentist 2 days ago and she told me that i should tell her in a couple of months if my wisdom teeth fully grow in since there is a small chance that there will not be enough space for the teeth to grow in. im not sure if this could be a cause since my symptoms started many months ago. also i dont feel pain in my gums as it is neck muscle tightness. my physician told me that im on the right path with my exercises that i do to try to calm the muscles but im still feeling tightness (especially after i workout). i dont lift heavy and go crazy when i workout; i am more of a fitness XXXXXXX who knows a crazy amount of good and safe exercises but cant perform half of them because of my neck. im not sure where to go and what to do and i have not gotten an official diagnosis yet ( even after all the doctors and specialists i have seen). the tightness is really obnoxious at times and affects my daily life and activities. (for example: i refrain as much as possible from any throwing motion as this engages the muscles on top of the clavicle). i have done research and read that stress can cause neck tightness but i am not a stressed out guy and if this was the cause, all the exercises and PT would have gotten rid of this long ago.
i am not sure where to head next or if i dont need to head anywhere and just continue to do my neck exercises. this situation really bothers me and Im yearning to get back into my normal teenage life. i would love to hear what your opinion is, what you have to say, and if you have ever heard of these symptoms before.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
MY VOICE IS GETTING BETTER BUT THE ACTUAL NECK MUSCLES ARE STILL TIGHT. I FORGOT TO TELL YOU THAT IT HAS BEEN HARD FOR ME TO TALK TO SOMEONE IN A LOUD ENVIRONMENT DUE TO MY SITUATION. ALSO, I AM DEFINITELY PERFORMING MY WORKOUTS THE RIGHT WAY SO I KNOW THAT ITS NOT MAKING IT WORSE. MY NECK JUST GETS TIGHT AND DOESNT GET BETTER.NOT TO BRAG, I AM ALSO A GREAT ATHLETE WHO HAS FALLEN BEHIND BECAUSE OF LACK OF TRAINING AND INABILITY TO GIVE IT MY ALL WHEN PERFORMING. DO YOU THINK I WILL EVER BE ABLE TO BE 100% AGAIN? NOT ONLY IN TERMS OF SPORTS BUT ALSO IN QUALITY OF LIFE AND LACK OF NECK TIGHTNESS?

Brief Answer:
I think you need to continue your exercises

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

First of all I like to inform you that wisdom teeth is unlikely cause for sort of muscle contraction you are experiencing. The stiffness due to dental pathology is often limited to small muscles and large muscles such as stern cleido mastoid rarely involved. In addition wisdom teeth often erupts after 18 years of age and I think it is too early for you to have wisdom teeth.

Secondly I feel if the exercises are helping you need to continue with them. I understand there is limited progress but for the such problems you have the best hope from physiotherapy and exercises only.

In addition if your doctor recommends some muscle relaxant they can be used as there is good possibility that use of muscle relaxant will ensure better recovery.

I hope this helps you.
Feel free to write back to me if you have more questions.
Thanks and regards.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for follow up.

I do not think you need to concern about single teeth eruption at 17 years of age as some biological variation is rule rather than exception.

Regarding muscles the most often involved muscles in dental pathology include digastric, massater, temporalis, pterygoid among others.

I hope this helps you further.
Thanks again.
