Question: hi doctor,
I'm XXXXXXX 22 years of age. I'm married and have a child 22 months. it was a cesarean. We were not planing for another child but i was not on any birth control pills because i had some side effects using them caused breast tenderness, migraine, mood swings.Unfortunately i missed my period 2 months back and got to know that i was pregnant 5 weeks but the baby had no heartbeat . we planned not to keep it and i had a D&C when it was 7 weeks. And Doctor advised us for IUD (Copper - T) , so it was done same time after the D&c procedures . So on single day after D&C procedures doctor inserted the IUD (Copper -T). After the procedure i had a very bad cramping followed with mild bleeding. The following day i had some sharp pain on my right breast and right underarm, this pain lasted for 3-4 days until i apply hot pack. After i apply hot pack it was better but the pain shifted to the left side both left breast and left underarm .But the bleeding stopped in 1 week. however i have the sharp pain on my breast and underarm still and it was on both sides. The bleeding and cramping started again after 5 days. Now i have the sharp pains even on my nipple and the breast feels so heavy, i always have to apply some hot pack for the pain and it was not a permanent relief. so i consult my gynecologist and she said its all due to hormone changes in the body and also might be due to IUD ( Copper T ) since its a foreign body. She also said it might take some time to adopt and until the hormone settles back to normal. But im still having those sharp pain on my both breast, underarms and nipples. this time its getting more painful and more frequently. In addition to the above last year my husband had a unprotected sex with sex worker by mistake . After the incident he apologized and we went to the doctor for check up for sexually transmitted diseases , repeated the test for 6 month, so far we both fine . But now since all this hapen im really confused and concern weather am i having any serious problem due to the reasons of D&C or the IUD or did i catch up any STDs? So Doctor please do tell me what you think?

Brief Answer:
There is no connection between breast symptoms and the IUD

Detailed Answer:
Hello miss- and I hope I can help you today.

The copper IUD prevents pregnancy by having a foreign body in your uterus that makes it harder to conceive from mild inflammation inside your womb. It normally causes irregular bleeding and cramping and sometimes heavier more painful periods but it has no hormones in it and therefore does not affect your breasts or any other parts of your body. Your body takes time to recover from a pregnancy even if you didn't have a live baby and your gynecologist is right that it just takes time.

However anyone can develop breast changes after having a baby- this can be caused with the leftover hormones from the milk- or if you gained weight during the pregnancy this can change your breasts too.

Decreasing caffeine and drinking evening primrose tea can help with breast pain

Your GYN should also examine you to check for breast lumps.

Regardig the IUD it can be dangerous for you to contract an STD with it inside- fortunately your testing was negative but if there is a risk you could be exposed again you might want to select another birth control method. If your husband uses sex workers it would be safest for you to use a condom to prevent transmission of STD's to you.

I hope I was adequately able to answer your questions and that my advice was helpful. Please do not hesitate to contact me further if you need any clarification or any additonal advice.

Best wishes, Dr. Brown

Hello Doctor,
Thank you for the kind reply. Feeling much better now. So doctor can I do any workouts now. Will it effect the position of the IUD? Should I be on any special diet to ease the breast pain or the engorgement of the breast. My breast has doubled in size since the birth of my first child and now it has got even bigger and its been hard for me. I always feel that its so heavy.

Brief Answer:
You can exercise as much as you want and tight bra helps

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

The IUD is designed to stay in your uterus with any type of activity. So you can exercise as much as you feel up to.

Wearing a tight sports bra can help with support and discomfort in the breasts, especially at night if you sleep wearing it. Decreasing caffeine and salt intake can also help, as well as evening primrose tea if you can find it in your area.

I hope this is helpful and that you feel better.

Sincerely, Dr. Brown
