What Causes Menstruation During Mid-cycle?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Apr 2015
Question: Dear Doctor,

Thank you for inquiring about me with regards to my previous early period.
As I mentioned in my previous mail, I had a light period within 18 days from previous period. I had bleeding for about 4 days and then it stopped.

As per your suggestion, I was supposed to visit a Gyn. however due to lot of work and family commitments I didn't go to see her yet. I should be able to visit her by mid-April.

I am also taking my Euthyrox medicine regularly without altering the dosage!!!

In the meantime, I am keeping a close track of my overall cycle and how I feel, etc. One thing I did notice is that there are days when I have much more vaginal discharge and giving a wet feeling. However, there are other days when I don't really notice any discharge.

For example, two days after my period stopped, I noticed lot of white vaginal discharge. Then there was a third day when I hardly noticed anything. Then again, noticed discharge. This was followed again by some dry days. Now again I notice vaginal discharge and also a feeling of being wet at the vagina.

I was wondering if there is any pattern to the discharge or it can happen anytime.

Your inputs would shed some light to this situation.

Thanks and regards,

Brief Answer:
Discharge varies, it is normal.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again Abagtha
Glad to hear from you.
Since the bleeding stopped in about 4 days, I am not pretty sure it was an early / aberrant period, due to the altered thyroid medication.
But please do have the workup as early as you can, as discussed earlier.
Regarding your question about vaginal discharge, yes there is a distinct pattern to it.
Immediately after your period ends, is the ' dry period '.
For 3 - 4 days after your period ends, the discharge is almost nil, but the amount might vary.
The next 3 - 4 days, the mucus starts increasing, it is thick, creamish and not much in amount.
this covers uptil day 9 - day 10 of your cycle.
After that the cervical mucus increases in amount.
During time of ovulation ( day 14 ), it is clear, stretchy, resembling raw egg white. This is ' fertile ' mucus.
AFter ovulation, it can remain clear and watery for a few days and then again reduces in amount and becomes thicker and creamish as your period approaches.
Then the cycle begins all over again.
Hope this helped you.
So it is quite normal to have different amounts and types of discharge at different points in the menstrual cycle.
Some days feel wet , and some days feel dry.
As long as there is no itching / foul smell / redness / pain, you do not have to worry about the varying types and amount of discharge .
Take care, and keep me posted.

Dear Doctor,
Thank you for your reply and explanation about different types of discharge. I think during this mens. cycle, the creamy thick discharge started by 3rd day after period. Anyhow, I am keeping a track and trying to understand my own body.

With regards to my period, from the time I underwent the surgery to remove my right ovary, my period has reduced from 5 days to 4 days. I am having 4 days period from over a year now. Actually by 3rd day, the amount of blood starts to reduce already and then the 4th day is only slight bleeding, which is slightly heavier than spotting. Normally from 5th day onwards I don't see any bleeding. So I am thinking that this is a new pattern for my body. I don't if my thinking is right or wrong...!!! But it's now going on for a good number of cycles.

Yes, I will be able to go to the doctor by mid-April and immediately keep you posted about how it is going.

Thanks again.
