What Causes Lump On Thigh?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Dec 2014
Question: Hi,

I have a lump in the middle part of my thigh, which becomes apparent when I flex the muscle in a seated position. I went to an orthopedic surgeon, who conducted an ultra sound, and discovered a cyst containing fluid at that point in the thigh. The ultra sound was conducted "in a rush", and the doctor said that it was from some type of injury.

I insisted on an MRI. I have had this done. The diagnostic clinic called me (2 days later), and said that the ultrasound specialist would like to see me to conduct a further ultrasound.

Should I be worried ? Shouldn't an MRI show what is wrong ? I am not hesitant to say that I am afraid of it being some sort of sarcoma (which the original doctor ruled out).

Do cysts containing fluid frequently occur ? I am an active person, who is prone to injury, and I might of hurt it doing some sort of activity, but brushed it off.

Thanks a lot, XXXX

Brief Answer:
It is probably a cyst but MRI should rule out Sarcoma.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Its good that you got an MRI done. It would be able to tell clearly whether it is a cyst or a tumor like a Sarcoma.

The area you describe is notorious for blood collections leading to cysts after some injury. So cysts containing fluid can occur in that area, but it is always better to be sure that it is not a solid swelling like a Sarcoma.

I suggest you meet your Doctor and ask what the MRI impression is. sometimes, they require a confirmatory investigation like a repeat detailed Ultrasound to come to a final diagnosis. If this be so they will tell you and if they suspect anything other than a cyst they will advice a Biopsy also.

Don't worry, but get the investigations done so you can be sure what it is. You can send us the reports if you need advice on the treatment and further course of action.

Take care,
