What Causes Low Grade Fever, Ear Ache And Chest Pain In A Child?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 May 2016
Question: My 10 year old daughter has had a low grade fever (99-100.3) since Thursday night. We have been to the dr. 2x already. The second trip he pulled some wax out of her ear, said there was some inflammation and that he felt she had a virus of some type, but couldn't identify which one. She has an ear ache, her chest is hurting her and her throat is very sore. The ear medicine that he prescribed will not go into the ear canal. She has sat for move than an hour trying to get it to come down. Any idea of what this may be? She has been in bed resting since Friday morning.

Brief Answer:
Virus

Detailed Answer:
Hello. I just read through your question.

The story you're relating is consistent with a viral illness, as your doctor said. This can last 7 to 10 days before resolving. The only question I would ask, is if your pediatrician suspected strep throat. This could be determined by a simple in office test, and if positive would require antibiotic treatment.

If a strep test wasn't done, I recommend consulting with your doctor about it. If you are having difficulty with the ear drops, Tylenol or motrin taken by mouth can be substituted for pain. Outside of these suggestions, fluids and rest are the mainstays for these common viral infections.
