What Causes Light-headedness And Dizziness After Knee Surgery?

default
Posted on Tue, 27 Sep 2016
Question: I had an operation on my knee about 6 weeks ago, and can walk easily on it , but I feel light-headed/dizzy when I start walking. I've fallen a couple of times, and seem to have maybe tripped over my own feet, particularly turning a corner into a room. Had inner ears tested--not the cause. .???

Brief Answer:
It is due to postural hypotension

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I have studied your case and I think it can be due to postural hypotension. In this condition there is sudden giddiness when patient walk from sleeping position. Also it can be due to low fluid and electrolytes in blood. Less common cause can be anemia. I have following suggestions for you.
1.Get your hemoglobin and BP check.
2.Take salt in fluid and juices.
3.Avoid sudden sitting or walking. Give your body some time to adjust.
I hope these steps will be helpful for you. Let me know if you have any other follow up questions.
Thanks

I am on a diaretic and told to cut back on salt, which I have done greatly. Trying to drink enough water, but not sure I am. Had anemia, but the last month I have been near normal, yet dizziness is not gone. Should I increase my salt intake?

Brief Answer:
low glucose and salt can cause dizziness

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
If your blood glucose is not normal or BP is not under control then you can have dizziness. You can check your blood sugar and blood pressure and then plan management. If there is low sugar then you take some high sugar food like banana or fruit juice.
If BP is low then you take salt with glass of water. Taking fluid without salt will not work.
thanks
