Posted on Wed, 7 Jan 2015
Question: I am experiencing pain on my legs while sitting and also when I laydown on my back. Usually the pain comes on both legs about 5-10 minutes after I sit.

Recently I went to the doctor and after X-rays and an MRI it was determined that I had a protrusion on one of my vertebral discs and some arthritis as well.

Can I get advise of what can I do so I can stop this condition on my legs?.

Brief Answer:
Needs surgery ideally

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I am Dr Mittal

I am not sure if your doctors have told you. So I will start by telling you what is happening.

The protruded disc is supposed to keep the bones of the spine separated so that the nerves that come out of the spine are normal. In your case, the disc has been pushed back and is now compressing the nerve causing the pain.

The nerve compression must be severe to cause pain. Ideally I would suggest a surgical correction of the condition by an experienced spinal surgeon.

In the meantime, you can meet a doctor for a prescription of pregabalin and methylcobalamin. These may afford some relief to you, but you will need to get a prescription for the drug.

Besides starting physiotherapy may help a lot as the back muscles build up. The nerves can then relax.

Best of luck

Dr. Mittal;

Can you explain what could have caused the protrusion on my vertebral disk?.

I have been running 10 miles/wk. for almost 15 years but stopped running in 2010 due to a knee injury. The pain on my legs while sitting started showing since I stopped running in 2010 and got worse in 2012.

I have started running again because my Dr. ask me to have regular exercise due to some liver problems (high cholesterols and "fatty liver"). Do you think that running will make the condition of my vertebral disks and leg pain worse?.

I really thank you for the advice about the surgery but unfortunately I would not like to do this because I am afraid something could happen and make it worse.

Is there any other treatment like physiotherapy or maybe certain exercise that could help?.

Thank you again for your advise.

Hi
I have read your query.
I think I would be able to help you.

The fact remains that the disc degeneration is very often a regular age related problem. It's something like arthritis, where also the disc between bones loose water.

And yes I will suggest against running. The jerk of every step you run is compensated by these discs. It will aggravate the condition.
Brisk walk is acceptable.

You can try physiotherapy and you can try a prescription for pregabalin or gabapentine. But If the prescription doesn't help, we will have to consider surgery.

I have tried to make it as simple as possible. I hope that the information helps you. Please feel free to contact us for more information. Best of luck. Dr Mittal.
