What Causes Itchy Ears While On Amoxil?

default
Posted on Tue, 1 Sep 2015
Question: I thought I had strep throat culture was negative. my doctor told me to stay on my antibiotics because she thought I had a lot of sinus gunk. so this is almost the third day on amoxil. I am improving some. but I've noticed my ears itch bad inside, mostly just my right ear. I have been on amoxil 100 times, I have no other issues and I've taken 5 pills of 875 mg already. could this be related to my sore throat and dry ears or wax? if it was an allergy wouldn't I have other symptoms?? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Likely to be secondary to the infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

The nasopharynx is connected to the ear via a tube called the eustacian tube. Any infective or inflammatory / allergic process affecting either the nasal cavities/sinuses or pharynx can extend to the ear that can present as pain, itching or temporary hearing difficulties etc. If you were my patient, I would add a decongestant plus antihistamine combination along with the antibiotics to counter the symptoms in the ear. Its not necessary for full fledged flu alone to cause such an allergy. Based on your description, its most likely related to your sinus blockade for which you are on amoxicillin.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
