What Causes Intermittent Attacks Of Upper Right Abdominal Pain?

Posted on Mon, 6 Jul 2015
Question: Hi. I recently had a upper respiratory infection/sinus (June 10-15) and was given Ciprofloxan 500mgs to treat. I experienced a lot of coughing and sneezing to the point where I was sore from my upper abdominal to my mid back still today. I feel a lot better now. My question is this. I feel a nagging pain right where my gallbladder/upper right abdominal area under my ribcage. It comes and goes when I stand up but once I sit down or lay down it pretty much goes away, its not unbearable or anything more of a annoyance. I actually had a lot of gas due to the consumption of sugar free cough drops and figured it was that but have not used one in the past two days. My question is what could this be?

Hi and thank you for asking!
I read carefully all your concerns and understood your concerns.

Your symptoms may be related to:
- bowel spasms/IBS
- gallbladder issues

If you were my patient I would recommend to do the following examinations:
- blood work
- abdominal ultrasound

For the moment you can use butiscopolamin ( to reduce bowel spasms) and simethicone ( to reduce bowel gas formation).

I suggest too to use foods reached in vegetable, plenty of water.
Wishing you fast recovery.

thanks for your fast response. I have a final question about the gallbladder.

Ive noticed after larger fatty or carbohydrated meal that my right side under the ribcage will ache all the way around to my right side and eventually ease off after a few hours, there are a few instances where it will feel discomfort during the day not nesscearly around eating. Is that a sign of gallbladder trouble?

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

It's typical for gallbladder issues to have pain after big fatty meals.

Another characteristics of gallbladder issues is that the pain go around to the back and to the chest and last for hours.

This is why I strongly recommended you to do blood work and abdominal ultrasound.

Wish you health!

How can someone differentiate Liver pain vs Gallbladder pain.
and with gallbladder issues can you feel as if a small electrical current runs through the area right after you eat? Sometimes the pain or fullness comes with no eating or anything.

Brief Answer:
Following advice.

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

The liver isn't painful unless there's an acute liver damage or liver carcinoma. Liver pain has no relation with food.

Moreover liver pain is related with severe life threatening overall health conditions.

On the other hand gallbladder pain is more common and is caused from stones or sludges. It's frequent after eating fatty foods.

This is why my opinion was from the beginning related to gallbladder issues.

Hope this was of help!
Wish you health!

Sounds good. Is it normal to have soreness over that area after the pain goes away?
Also two years ago during routine blood work I had a slight elevation to my alt/ast 120/60. After a few weeks my test were normal and have continued to be. Doctor thinks it was because of antibiotic minocycline or just a flue . So everytime I have acid reflux or pain in that area I get worried... I have suffered from after eating pain for a number of years and used to have it through my back but now it's just more in the rib area.
In the past few minutes I have found that my soreness actually seems to be in the muscle and in the ribs even up into the sternum area. I palates the area and found tenderness through the rib age on right quadrant and up into sternum and slightly into the pec muscle
Now that I have palpable the area it seems to be more right under the ribs and maybe some what on the edge of the rib...me hen I stretch and lean back while standing I feel the soreness also

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Thank you for your follow up queries.

1. The soreness you are describing this time seems to be related to muscular pain.

2. However, abdominal ultrasound is advised to run to rule out gallbladder issues.

3. For the moment, I advise to take oral pain killers for some days together with applying analgesic cream locally.

Hope it was of help!
