What Causes Hive Like Swollen Patches On Upper Lip?

default
Posted on Tue, 30 Jun 2015
Question: Hello I am experiencing for 5 days now a hive like patch on my upper lip that appears a bit swollen, at first I thought it could be a cold sore coming on but it is not like that at all. Can you please help me figure out what it is? It doesn't appear red, more like a lighter colour than my lips and just feels off, tight. There was some tingling here and there but the status has not changed at all in 5 days. I took a few benedryls but that didn't seem to help

I was told I would get an answer soon. Please respond as I paid the $15 fee. Thank you
doctor

1. since when are you having this problem? It has been 5 days. It started on Monday and it is Friday today.
2. did it start after taking some particular food or after going to bed? I was eating a salad bar salad that I eat for lunch almost every weekday and I didn't add anything new to the salad. It happened 30 minutes after.
3. are you allergic to some food? I have a sensitivity to Gluten and that is really all these days. I had some dairy allergies and almond allergy when I was a kid that went away for years now.
4. did such problem occur in past? I've never had this in the past.
5. do you have diabetes, hypertension or any other illness? I have minor thalesemia and that is all.
6. are you on any medication?7. is there itch as well? Not on any medication and yes there was a slight tingling sensation and itch initially but for the most part no.
8. is anyone else in the family also having similar complaint? No one else is having this problem.
9.can you share a clear close image of that area? yes I will try to attach a pic but I don't see an option to do that anymore.

I just uploaded a pic for you.

Thank you DR.

Brief Answer:
Most probably allergic reaction

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thank you for getting back with the answers & the image. Your symptoms are suggesting allergic reaction to food. It usually takes few days to resolve. If i were your treating doctor then i would have advised following things:

- cetirizine one at night for 5 days.
- Apply Fusidate Sodium ointment over the the lip area in small quantity once a day.
- Try not to touch that area unnecessarily, else it might leave scar.
- If you have chronic/recurrent allergic problem so for that i would suggest you to take motelukast once a day for one month. Research has shown that it reduces the incidence of allergic response considerably.

Hopefully your problem will resolve in few days. If condition remains same or aggravates then you need to visit hospital and get an appointment for a "Consultant Dermatologist" for further workup

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!
