What Causes Headache, Nausea And Vertigo After Doing Neck Exercises?

default
Posted on Tue, 10 Jun 2014
Question: I saw a chiropractor and was told i have a lot of tension in my neck and back from stress. He did one adjustment and the symptoms i already have of veritgo, headache, neck pain, nausea, motion sickness all got worse. I decided not to go back and try to treat myself with the information he told me. I downloaded a book that talks about rebuilding your neck and I started doing these neck excercises to help strengthen the muscles and now my neck hurts more, i have a horrible headache, nausea, ringing in my ears, and vertigo/motion sickness, tenderness to touch where my eyebrows are. Is it possible that my tight neck muscles are causing all these symtpoms. Ive had MRI of brain and my entire spine. I have a bulging disk at l4 and some osteoarthritis
in my neck. Lab work is normal. Tension headache?? Vestibular headache?? I dont know if i should continue with the neck exercises or stop them?

Brief Answer:
Stop all the exercises.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your query.

Definitely all these symptoms are due to tightness in neck. You should stop doing any type of exercise by yourself because these if done i pain will cause more harm than benefit. Wear cervical collar with chin support throughout the day. Try to avoid traveling as much as you can and avoid jerks as much as you can.

You are suffering from both tension and vestibular headache. You can take 1 tab.aceclofenac+thiocolchicoside three times a day, 1 tab. cinnarizine 25 mg three times a day, and tab alprazolam .25 mg at night by prescription of doctor.

Apply hot packs for 30 mins in morning and evening.

I hope you have got your answer.

I probably should have goven more detailed info. Ive been suffering with this for the past 5 1/2 months since the birth of my second child. . I went through 15 physical therapy sessions of ultrasound, tens unit, stretches and still have the pain. How long should i discontinue the stretches Ive been doing before I restart? Do you know anything about trigger point therapy? Accupuncture? I would like to condition my body since i am extremely out of shape too...but it is difficult when my whole support structure drom my neck all the way down to my hips are sore and in pain.

Brief Answer:
If pain increases on exercise you should stop it.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the query again my friend.

You should stop stretches only when you feel more pain during exercise then without it, other wise you can do exercises till 1 month more. I have heard about trigger point therapy and acupuncture but these things have no place in medical science and nor much paper on these things have been presented till now, there is no scientific basis of these, but I have heard that these things help some people. So it is upto your choice.

If you want to tone up your body you can do morning walk and have balanced diet.

If your whole body aches the you can have blood tests including fasting blood sugar, E.S.R, C.R.P, serum uric acid and serum RA factor quantitative and send me the report so that I can further advise you treatment.

I hope it helps.

You are welcome to ask any health related query.

Thanks.

Dr.Singh.
