Question: I am on birth control and have been for 7 months. About 3 months ago, i got a really bad headache after my period, and it lasted about a week. Now, on my 7th month i have really bad headaches again after i just finished my period. Is it because of my birth control? And is it normal that these headaches do not happen every month?

Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern.

Birth control Pills are associated with headaches and many women are not able to tolerate them.

The headaches if associated with your menses, then its pretty common and a variety of treatments exist pertaining to premenstrual syndrome and dysphoria that can alleviate a lot of the symptoms.

Please let me know what your average BP control is if you have checked it.
Is the headache associated with other symptoms like decreased vision or a sinus infection or vertigo.
What other medications are you taking in addition to the birth control pills

Brief Answer:
Yes , the headache can occur irregularly

Detailed Answer:
hello again,

hormonal levels and changes can vary from month to month. Each menses has its own difference and similarity at the same time plus the external environmental factors , eg noise , fatigue and stress can also vary. So correlation of the headache being skipped on certain months should not be done at the moment.

Please get you blood sugar and blood pressure checked the next time you have such an acute headache. You may withhold the current meds and discuss an alternative combination in consult with your gynecologist.

If you want to continue the same meds and same method of contraceptives then you may add Tab gabapentin 600 mg bd and Cap Sumig plus to this regimen in acute headache episodes.

For prevention low dose propranolol can be used if you have no contraindications to beta blockers. eg asthma or COPD.

hi.

Such symptoms are common side effects associated with birth control pills. It would be a matter of concern, If despite the additional medications , the headaches persist then you should stop the BCPs to see for improvement and discuss an alternative contraceptive with your gynecologist.
