What Causes Frequent Urge To Urniate With Strong Vaginal Smell?

default
Posted on Tue, 9 Sep 2014
Question: I had unprotected sex with someone who ended up having chlamydia ...it will be 2 weeks this coming Monday. I was having the following symptoms and went to the doctor on Tuesday of this week. I was having constant diarrhea since he entered into my life ( an ex and his presence was stressful but the symptoms persist even though I have ended contact ) , lower left quandrant abdominal discomfort --and right in the middle low in the pelvic area and frequent urge to urinate. I also feel that there is a stronger vaginal smell. I was tested for a UTI and for chlamydia and Gon and at that time it was negative. I do have IBS and I do have ovarian fibroids.

Brief Answer:
Urine, and vaginal discharge examination needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.
On the basis of your history, I would suggest you a couple of tests.
Get an urine test -routine and microscopy to look for infection in the urinary tract.
If infection is detected, get a urine culture and drug sensitivity, these tests are done to know the organism causing the infection and select most appropriate antibiotic effective against the infectious agent.

You have mentioned that there is strong vaginal odor.
Is this vaginal odor associated with any kind of discharge?
If yes get the discharge examined to look for infection.
If no discharge get a vaginal swab and get it examined.

These two investigation will identify infection in the urinary tract and the vaginal tract.

Chlamydia infection is not detected by the above tests.
Thus, a serological test for chlamydia should be repeated.

The lower quadrant abdominal discomfort and pelvic area could be due to pelvic inflammatory diseases which will be assessed by above mentioned tests.

A history of IBS can be responsible for the diarrhea, thus, you need to consult your treating gastroenterologist for this problem.

Consult your gynecologist for clinical assessment and prescription of above mentioned investigations.

If you more queries, I will be glad to answer.

They already ran all the above urine and vaginal swab tests . It was all negative. They concluded it was IBS and stress related. However I do not necessarily agree.
So if everything was negative , what do I do now?

Brief Answer:
Symptoms due to IBS, consult a gastroeneterologist

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome again,
If all tests are negative, then urinary tract infection and reproductive tract infections are ruled out.
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a stress related disease and it can cause abdominal pain and discomfort along with diarrhea.
I would suggest you to consult your treating gastroenterologist for clinical assessment, relevant investigations and medication to control the symptoms.

Thanks and take care

The tests I had done were 1 week after intercourse. Should I have them repeated or was that enough time to detect infection?

Answered by Dr. Shailja Puri (3 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Serology should be repeated, others if symptomatic

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome again,
The serological test for chlamydia should be repeated.
Serological tests are antibody based thus the antibodies may take some time to appear in blood.
Vaginal odor/ discharge if persists should be repeated.
If there is associated burning during urination, urine test should be done again.

Thanks

Chlamydia test can be done now i.e. after 2 weeks.
