What Causes Fever With Low Platelet Levels?

default
Posted on Tue, 6 Sep 2016
Question: I have Sjogens. My platelets are often a little low. Over the past 10 days I have felt weak and have had a low-grade fever (99.7 degrees). During that time I had blood tests and platelets came back at 105,000. They have never been that low before. Absent HIV, Epstein bar, or hepatitis can this be caused by a routine virus?

Brief Answer:
Viral infections cause high fever, low platelets not associated with Sjogren

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.
Viral infections can cause low platelet level.
However, viral infections are accompanied by fever, tiredness, weakness, generalised body ache and decreased appetite.
Fever in viral is often above 100 degree Fahrenheit.
A platelet count of 105 is low, however, not low enough to cause any complication.
Low platelet count may or may be associated with Sjogren syndrome.
I suggest you to repeat platelet count after 1-2 months.
If the count further falls down, you may need to consult a hematologist else there is nothing to worry.

If you have more queries, I will be glad to answer.

Thanks and take care
