Posted on Fri, 22 May 2015
Question: Hello doctor
I am 42 years old male. I was suffering from fever from 28 Mar 15. I went to doctor and she advised me to go for CBC. In that report my wbc was on the higher side 11900. she prescribed me Augmentin 1 gm for 3 days. After taking fever went down but after 3-4 days again it came as previous. I went to another doctor and again he advised me CBC and my wbc was on the higher side 14000. He prescribed me antibiotics for 6 days but neither fever nor wbc level went down. than I visited another doctor and he admitted me there and through dip gave me 3 days ofloxacin and cefzime followed by cefixine tablets for 6 days. Fever went down with very first day but when I went for CBC again than my wbc counting is still on the higher side 15000. my hb level is also down may be because I cudnt take proper meals for 20 days during fever. now he us advising me for blood culture but I m worried as he said that it may be some big problem with me. Please advise me the what I sud do. In January 15 also I had viral infection and my wbc was high. that time I took antibiotics for 5 days and it went down. Please advise me what may be the problem with me and what I sud do at this stage.

Brief Answer:
I would suggest you to get the culture done.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Thanks for writing back,

I hope you have been doing great.

It's good to know that your fever is not there any more.

If this wasn't typhoid then still it was some infection which responded to antibiotics. Even typhoid sometimes comes false negative in tests.

Well I will suggest you to get your culture done if that comes out clear then you can take a XXXXXXX of relief and if something is found wrong at least culture will tell which drug can be given for completely controlling the infection.

Also discuss with your doctor getting some tuberculosis work up done this is common in south east Asia if you are there or visited it lately.

I want to assure you that there doesn't seem to be anything dangerous, fever and hight WBC can be there in some forms of cancers but WBC in them are much much high reaching 40-50 thousand and they don't get settled by antibiotics.

So most probably it is some bug which is causing the symptoms i believe ,and hopefully this bug will come on culture.

Then there is always an option to repeat CBC on monthly basis to see if things are getting better or worsening .

But till then you don't have to panic just get the culture done and see what results suggest.

I Hope this answers your question, if your have more queries feel free to ask, otherwise close the discussion and rate it. Wish you the best of health.

Regards,

Dr.Muhammad Ahmad.

Thanks for your reply doctor I am feeling relaxed. I was too much worried about it. I will get my culture done. I forgot to mention to you that I am suffering from DVT and on acitrom 6 mg OD. Is there anything due to this?
I have hypertension too and taking Telma CT 40/6.25 OD. is there anything due to this?

Brief Answer:
DVT can cause it too

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for fruther information.

You have definitely told me another suspected cause other than infection.

Research says that DVT can also cause rise in WBC,

Ia will try to share some good research with you as well.

None of your medicines is expected to do this.

I will suggest you to take care of your DVT and DVT meds plus get a culture done , then you will get to know about further plan.

Here is a link to a research:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/0000

..If you are getting a culture. Repeating a typhoid test wont be needed.

I hope you are having more idea about the issue.

You can aks me any further questions if your have.

Regards Dr.Ahmad
