Question: HI I frequently get burns in my lips. My lips become so dry and it burns whenever I touch it with tounge to get rid of the dryness. After a day or two I can see a small visible burn which gets cured by itself in 2 days. Please suggest what could be the cause. I have tried applying ghee coconut oil and lip balms. They have given temporary relif but it comes back again. I am in bangalore and it is not too cold also here. Pls suggest some medication

Mostly in upper lip. Sometimes in lower I dont remain in sun for longer time. My office is AC but my house at this time of the year is a little hot The lips get darker during the time of the burn No history of oral ulcer The lips become sore it hasnt bled so far but I can spot a very visible dark red burn. It is not there right now. Please let me know if a picture is still required. I am afraid that I may not be able to show the affected area clearly

Brief Answer: Cheilitis;Topical steroid Detailed Answer: Hi. Seems to me a simple case of cheilitis/dry chapped lips. Another possibility is of Fixed drug eruption(FDE). FDE is drug eruption which is fixed in its location i.e everytime a persons takes an offending drug the eruption happens at the same place repeatedly. FDE can happen to painkillers, antibiotics, anthelmintics etc. FDE usually leaves behind prolonged bluish/black hyperpigmentation. But since you told that the patches resolve by themselves in about 2 days, therefore FDE is not likely in your case For chelitis, you could use a moderately potent topical steroid, fluticasone propionate Or Mometasone furoate ointment, twice daily for a few days and thereafter you may continue with a lip balm. An Oral B-Complex vitamin once daily is advisable. regards
