What Causes Dry, Flaky And Itchy Scalp?

default
Posted on Tue, 27 Dec 2016
Question: Hello - I seemed to have a lot of scalp itching and flaking, then a lot of what seemed to be dry skin patches. I tried Head & Shoulders Itch Relief and it did seem to help -- but the dry patches never seemed to go away. I read on line about Eczema of the scalp which recommended Neutrenga T/SAL -- I've tried that once now. Reason I thought Eczema of the scalp was I had a tiny spot on my hand and back of neck which my doctor said was Eczema. After using the T/SAL -- the itching is much better and seems the dry patch is as well but seems my scalp is now so oily and greasy after just once use -- not sure if this is how it should be?

Brief Answer:
Most likely seborrhoeic dermatitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM.

I have gone through your query. Your problem can be most likely due to seborrhoeic dermatitis. Using medicated shampoos like salicylic acid with ketoconazole and zinc pyrethione will be helpful for this. Shampoos like selsun blue is good also.
Local corticosteroids like clobetasol ointment or gel can be used in time of acute episode also.

Let me know if anything not clear.
I am happy to help you.
Thanks.
